Background Information about Huang Kelaer

Introduction

There is something mysterious about Kelaer Huang’s narrative photographs, which float between fashion photography and retro aesthetics. Her works are full of elegance and esprit; their warm color enchants us, reminding us of the days of yore.

Kelaer Huang is the first female Taiwanese photographer in the LUMAS portfolio. Her series Travel with Dream is an homage to the women of the 1930s. “By delicately duplicating the gorgeous outfits of Western women from that time, I revive the free spirit that broke down traditional gender roles,” the photographer says, “while showing the world how spontaneous and beautiful their lives were.” Huang wants to continue working in new genres to create “vintage classics of the new era.”

With its cinematic appearance, Huang’s work uses a visual vocabulary with nuances reminiscent of Wong-Kar Wai’s 2000 film, In the Mood for Love, a period piece set in the 1960s. With his poetic aesthetic, the Chinese director has a large influence on culture in Asia. In a similar way, the Taiwanese photographer creates stories of graceful women from the early 1930s who had big dreams and went after them in style.
